Farabel opens at the end of its story, casting the player as a hero at maximum power before sending them into the past. Each journey backward leaves the character weaker while the challenges grow more complex, turning the usual arc of gaining strength into a test of adapting to reduced abilities. Its turn-based strategy asks players to rely on cleverness and planning as circumstances change.
The campaign follows Cendor, lord of Farabel, through a bid to save the city across 26 battles. Other modes put different pressures on tactical decisions: Challenge Mode offers a new battle each day and a new season each month, while Classic Mode lets players assemble an army with units and war machines, aiming to defeat an enemy quickly and with few casualties. Defence Mode instead pits a purchased army against an endless force, with survival and enemy defeats as its goals. The game also lists 40 units and 18 spells and abilities.
Across its modes, the central appeal is not simply building a stronger force, but choosing how to meet battles whose demands range from campaign progression to endurance and efficient victories.
