Fantasy General II places players in the fractured highlands of Aer, three centuries after the Shadow Wars. You are the heir to Falir One-Eye, a renowned clan leader, in a land where feuding Barbarian clans face the Empire and its legions. That political and personal setup gives the campaign its stakes: prove your worth while leading a clan through a conflict shaped by old rivalries.
The core is turn-based wargaming, with battles shaped by terrain, weapons, armour, magic, morale and the forces each side brings. More than 75 unit types, including heroes, give armies distinct possibilities, from berserkers and shamans to trolls and stag riders. Between battles, decisions and training develop the army, but losses matter: experienced units that perish also lose their accumulated progression. Gold, resources and magical artefacts add further choices in equipping and upgrading troops.
Its campaign moves across varied regions, including the magic-rich Fareach highlands, the Borderlands and the Sunken Land, where different battlefields call for changes in tactics and army composition. Together, the setting, persistent army development and tactical encounters define the game beyond its head-to-head format.
