In Expeditions: Rome, you play a young Roman Legatus driven from the capital after your father’s murder. Taking refuge in a campaign against a Greek rebellion, you build military standing while navigating the Republic’s politics. Decisions shape how others view both you and Rome, with the story placing personal drama alongside the fate of your legion, companions, and the state.
Combat is turn-based and tactical, built around a skill-based action system in which each weapon changes a character’s battlefield capabilities. You can customize the Legatus’s appearance, gender, class, and skills, then develop characters through abilities and equipment. Five companions bring individual personalities and backstories, while the fully voiced narrative makes choice and consequence part of the role-playing design rather than a separate strategic layer.
The game also shifts from personal encounters to command of a legion across campaigns in Greece, North Africa, and Gaul. Recruiting soldiers, improving a warcamp, conquering regions, using resources, and defending territory broaden its strategy beyond squad combat.
