Estranged: The Departure begins with a fisherman stranded on a mysterious island after a violent storm. His search through the island leads toward the secretive Arque Corporation, whose dangerous, haphazard operations become central to the unfolding story. The premise gives exploration a narrative purpose: the island is not simply a setting to cross, but a place where the player can uncover what the corporation is doing.
The game combines first-person adventure with familiar shooter combat. Players interact with objects, computers and audio logs, using these discoveries to build environmental storytelling around the island’s characters and hidden history. When exploration gives way to danger, guns and melee weapons provide ways to protect the stranded protagonist. That mix of narrative discovery and direct combat defines a more story-led experience than a purely action-focused shooter.
It is also a standalone sequel to Estranged: Act I, which followed the hero’s earlier search for a way home. The game’s focused, authored adventure was developed by Alan Edwardes over six years in spare time, with help from translators and testers in the community.
