ELEX II returns to Magalan, a post-apocalyptic science-fantasy world, several years after Jax defeated the Hybrid. A new threat from the sky puts the planet at risk, sending Jax to seek his separated son, Dex, and persuade the factions to unite. That personal mission gives the game’s sprawling journey a clear purpose, while its open world leaves room to approach the story with considerable freedom.
Traversal is a defining part of that design: Jax’s jetpack lets him move across the map and even fly through its varied environments. The world is hand-crafted and populated by NPCs whose memories and reactions reflect the player’s actions. They may join or leave the group depending on Jax’s behavior, and they can be killed, with consequences for the story. Combat combines close and ranged fighting, while moral decisions give choices a place in the narrative as well as in relationships with the people encountered.
ELEX II is presented as a single-player role-playing game, so its play format is a solo journey through exploration, combat, faction diplomacy, and consequential decisions rather than a shared multiplayer session.
