Dummynation puts the player in charge of a country with one overriding aim: world domination. Its grand-strategy framework brings together territorial expansion, diplomacy, economic choices, and research, asking players to build power without overextending. Occupation can bring new territory, but an empire that grows too quickly risks collapse; meanwhile, diplomatic maneuvering matters because invasions can create formidable opponents.
Conquests unfold progressively rather than resolving as a simple land grab. Resources belong to specific points on the map and are annexed over time, while resistance forces may emerge to slow attackers and wear them down. Players also choose national ideology and economic policy, balancing the support of research and military campaigns against the danger of impoverishing their country. The design aims to reduce the micromanagement typical of grand strategy, while leaving room to improve through deeper study of its systems.
The play format spans solo and multiplayer strategy: players can run custom scenarios, observe AI conflict in God mode, compete in a battle royale, or cooperate in team-based world wars. Custom games allow extensive edits to countries, territory, resources, and game parameters, and replays support reviewing victories or defeats.
