DOOM: The Dark Ages is a single-player dark fantasy and science-fiction prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. It casts the Slayer as a weapon serving gods and kings during a medieval war against Hell, pairing that cinematic premise with the series’ fierce, direct combat. Its focus is a personal story of rage and resistance, as the Slayer confronts demon hordes and their leader.
Combat emphasizes standing your ground on demon-infested battlefields rather than relying only on familiar firepower. The Super Shotgun returns alongside new weapons, including the versatile Shield Saw, which can cut through a hostile world as well as its enemies. That grounded approach gives the medieval setting a distinct identity while retaining the franchise’s high-impact action and exaggerated visual style.
Beyond the battlefields, the Slayer’s quest crosses ruined castles, dark forests, ancient hellscapes, and other unfamiliar realms. The game’s large levels are described as places of mystery, challenges, and rewards, giving exploration a role alongside combat.
