DESOLATE casts the player as a Volunteer sent to Granichny Island, where a disaster of unknown origin has left abandoned settlements, military sites and secret facilities scattered across a dangerous landscape. The Volunteer’s mission is to investigate paranormal activity and uncover the island’s past, piecing together its history through notes and diaries left by earlier residents. Monsters, marauders, soldiers and supernatural anomalies make exploration a survival challenge rather than a simple search for clues.
Combat supports both direct confrontation and stealth, while researching the island’s creatures can provide advantages in battle. Survival also involves developing abilities, collecting crafting recipes and components, and modifying or upgrading weapons and equipment. Granichny’s threat extends beyond physical danger: the player must manage mental as well as physical condition, and insanity can alter both the surrounding world and the Volunteer. Together, investigation, resource-building and psychological pressure give the island its distinctive survival-horror character.
Its premise centers on uncovering what happened to Granichny, while its mix of combat, stealth, crafting and mental-state management shapes how a Volunteer confronts the island’s threats.
