Deponia casts Rufus as a resident of a planet-sized garbage dump, separated by class from a wealthy population in a floating city above the clouds. When Goal, a woman from that upper world, falls into the junkyard, Rufus sets out to take her back to her husband. His plan to use the journey to reach the city grows complicated as he develops feelings for her, tying the comedy to a mismatched romance and his hope of escaping the dump.
The game is a single-player adventure built around challenging puzzles and extensive dialogue. Its hand-drawn, high-definition 2D presentation gives the setting a deliberately comic look, while bizarre characters and wacky humor shape the tone. Rather than centering on competition or repeated matches, Deponia frames play as following Rufus through a story, working through puzzles and conversations as his scheme goes awry.
Its appeal rests on the contrast between the trash-strewn world and the floating city, alongside the puzzle-solving, dialogue and comic mishaps that carry Rufus and Goal’s story.
