Depersonalization casts players as investigators in a role-playing game inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos. Its framing is cosmic and episodic: a timeless library beyond the river of time sends the Star Key through a gate to different worlds, where the task is to mend shattered timelines. That premise makes each module an investigation with its own route toward, or away from, the truth, rather than a single straightforward journey.
At the table-like core, players gather clues, roll dice to resolve checks and trigger events. Choices also shape how a situation unfolds: the game describes bribery, theft, trading and appeasement alongside stealth, intimidation and combat. Forbidden knowledge can open access to spells, while companions, character traits and mythos items add collectible discoveries. The mix of chance, investigation and flexible approaches gives the stories a role-playing structure without making combat the only path forward.
The game combines those authored modules with a creation mode and editor for building and publishing original adventures, including text-focused and rules-based formats. With published modules and a community Workshop library, Depersonalization’s identity rests on both investigating its stories and making new ones within the same game.
