In Defense Grid: The Awakening, an alien invasion threatens the player’s power cores, and survival depends on constructing defenses around them. Its tower-defense premise is shaped by the map: roads, open ground, and designated building locations differ between levels, so the same layout will not suit every assault. The goal is not simply to build a wall, but to plan how each position can help contain enemies before they reach the cores.
The game offers ten tower types, each with three capability levels and distinct trade-offs. Some attack along a line of sight, others use ballistic fire, and certain towers strengthen nearby defenses. Players also face fifteen enemy types that grow stronger through the levels and use different strategies to get past the towers. These interacting choices give each stage room for alternate solutions, while improved efficiency earns greater rewards. Challenge modes add another layer by changing starting conditions and objectives; the main storyline is described as approximately eight hours long.
Steam achievements reward completing levels and pursuing additional goals, including higher awards for especially strong results. The store listing also describes an expansion with additional maps and associated campaign and mode options, extending the same emphasis on adapting defenses to the terrain.
