Inspired by the film *WarGames*, DEFCON turns global thermonuclear conflict into a strategy game viewed from an underground bunker. Its objective is grimly framed: destroy enemy populations while protecting your own. Rather than presenting victory as a clean triumph, the game emphasizes the devastation of nuclear war and the imperative to lose less than your opponent.
Players position submarines, missile silos, and air defenses before committing to strategic exchanges. An attack can expose the attacker to retaliation, making aggression a gamble in a minimalist military interface that tracks death tolls in real time. Multiplayer adds another layer of uncertainty: alliances can form and fracture as players balance brinkmanship against self-preservation. The stark interface and soundscape reinforce the tension without obscuring the choices at the heart of play.
Its defining experience, however, is strategic pressure: every deployment and alliance unfolds against the possibility that escalation will leave everyone worse off.
