Death Must Die casts players as heroes making the perilous journey into Death’s realm to end his reign. Its premise pairs that mythic confrontation with a character-focused story: as the heroes explore the Underworld, players can uncover why the gods oppose one of their own and learn about each hero’s personal history. The result is a roguelite RPG built around repeated attempts against a powerful enemy and the forces guarding his domain.
Combat sets the heroes against large groups of Death’s minions and the Guardians protecting each circle. A pantheon of gods shapes each attempt by offering blessings, selected from a broad pool to form varied, synergistic builds. Randomized and unique items add another layer of build-making, while ancient shrines, mythical creatures and other Underworld inhabitants flesh out the expedition. The game also lets players pursue lost relics in exchange for empowering Death’s legions, making that choice a distinctive risk within its run-based design.
A varied cast of heroes, each with game-altering traits, gives the same descent different character-specific framing, while achievements offer further goals to pursue. Its combination of escalating encounters, god-granted powers and item-driven builds gives each attempt its own shape.
