Deadside sets its survival-shooter action in a post-Soviet landscape of forests, rivers and settlements. Rather than building progression around levels or bars, it ties advancement to player skill and acquired equipment. Challenging NPCs patrol the world, while missions provide clearly marked objectives, giving exploration both immediate dangers and goals to pursue.
Survival is shaped by what players risk and where they choose to shelter. Gear can be stored in safe zones, or players can build bases beyond settlements, outfit them with turrets and traps, and use comfort items for gameplay boosts. Vehicles including cars, motorcycles and boats support travel, alongside a metro-based fast-travel system. Combat emphasizes firearms and ballistics, with weapons that can be modified using attachments such as scopes and silencers.
The server format changes the social stakes: PvP allows fighting and unrestricted base raids, PvE prevents players from fighting or raiding one another, and scheduled-raid servers restrict raiding to specified times. In all three formats, players disappear when offline while the loot on their character remains.
