Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc confines Makoto Naegi and his classmates to Hope’s Peak Academy, separated from the outside world. Monokuma, a murderous bear, promises freedom to a student who kills a classmate and escapes blame. This grim bargain frames the story as a search for the truth behind the students’ confinement and the murders unfolding among them.
Solving each case combines investigation and courtroom-style argument. Players search for clues and question classmates, then take on suspects in Mock Trials, challenging their statements and exposing lies through exchanges of verbal attacks. Investigations also involve winning classmates over to obtain information. A range of timing- and reflex-based game systems then puts those findings to work as players try to uncover what happened. The design makes gathering testimony and scrutinizing claims central to the mystery, rather than treating the school setting as mere backdrop.
Its distinctive rhythm comes from moving between conversations, evidence gathering, and trials, where classmates’ words become material to test. That structure links the murder-mystery premise directly to the play, with each investigation feeding into an argument over who is responsible.
