Komaru Naegi’s imprisonment in a mysterious apartment ends with a rescue that quickly goes wrong: Towa City has fallen under the control of the Warriors of Hope, a group of children led by Monaca. Their plan to create a “children’s paradise” includes exterminating all adults. Komaru joins Toko Fukawa to survive the Monokuma threat, evade the Monokuma Kids, and uncover the city’s secrets, giving the action a larger mystery to follow.
The game casts its combat as third-person shooter action, with Komaru using the Future Foundation’s Hacking Gun against hordes of Monokumas. Its Truth Bullets include effects such as Paralyze and Link, while Bling Bullet modifiers can upgrade firepower. Shooting is only part of the challenge: riddles and puzzles also test the player, and the city holds familiar faces and mysteries to discover. That mix makes exploration and problem-solving part of the game’s survival-focused design, rather than treating every obstacle as a target.
Steam lists Ultra Despair Girls as a single-player game. That format puts its story, shooter encounters, and puzzles in a solo adventure, rather than framing its play around cooperative or competitive multiplayer.
