CRYO casts players as technicians for genetics corporation ANGENEX, sent to restore systems and recover research from isolated Antarctic facilities that have gone silent. The sites are abandoned, equipment is failing, and mutated creatures roam the halls. Survival depends not only on what is hunting the team but also on the hostile cold and hazardous surroundings, making each assignment a risky recovery operation rather than a straightforward repair job.
The game supports solo play as well as cooperative teams of up to four. Its threats respond to movement, sound, and environmental cues, and different creatures hunt in different ways, so players must adapt rather than rely on one tactic. Cameras and motion detectors help track danger, while music players can distract it; stealth, hiding, scavenging, repairs, puzzles, and other objectives all shape a mission. Objectives, equipment locations, creatures, and escape options can vary between deployments, while multiple routes out may call for extra repairs or equipment. Some escapes have limited capacity, turning the final leg into another team challenge.
Players may split up to cover ground or stay together to share equipment and watch for threats, weighing speed against safety. The mission is not complete when the facility is restored; the team still has to find and reach an escape, with Antarctica and its inhabitants posing danger along the way.
