Civil War: Battle of Petersburg is a turn-based tactical wargame about fighting around Richmond and Petersburg in the American Civil War’s final year. Its hex-based battlefield puts infantry, cavalry, artillery and generals under the player’s command, with terrain and positioning shaping each engagement. The premise is historical, but the focus is on solving immediate battlefield problems: how to use limited actions, hold ground and disrupt the opposing line.
Each formation has a limited number of movement and combat actions per turn, making decisions about advancing, concentrating fire or protecting a general part of the tactical puzzle. Players can switch between a tabletop-style Classic View and a command-oriented Tactical View, while the improved battlefield AI is described as responding to objectives, terrain and threats. Alongside individual historical battles and multiple difficulty levels, the game supports matches against another commander through online, LAN, hotseat and Play by Email modes. A scenario editor and Steam Workshop add options for creating and sharing battles.
Multiplayer offers several formats, from local hotseat play to online matches, while optional campaign expansions add missions and persistent-army management. The core appeal is a compact turn-based system framed around Civil War formations and terrain, with both historical scenarios and player-created battlefields supporting different ways to engage with the same tactical rules.
