City Defense Z is a single-player strategy game built around a repeating shift in priorities: use the day to prepare a city, then defend it after night falls. Its mix of action, casual, indie, and strategy genres is reflected in that pairing of settlement planning and combat, with persistent research upgrades giving failed runs a route toward a stronger next attempt.
Preparation is hands-on and resource-driven. Factory buildings produce materials for the base, ammunition buildings supply soldiers and defenses, barracks train troops, and houses raise the population limit. Players also choose NPCs, send them on expeditions, trade resources, deploy soldiers, and place structures on a grid where buildings and units can merge when arranged smartly. The resulting design makes positioning and resource choices part of the defense plan, rather than treating combat as a separate phase.
At night, players rely on the forces and defenses arranged earlier, with airstrikes and boosters available as additional tools. A lost run can feed into permanent progression: research points unlock upgrades across research trees, carrying improvements into later attempts. Leaderboards are also listed among the game’s features, providing a competitive reference alongside its primarily solo, run-based format; the central appeal remains refining a strategy from one defense to the next.
