Cities XL 2012 is a city-building game in which you take on the role of a virtual mayor, developing settlements across a world of varied maps. Its central challenge is balancing urban needs: residents require housing, recreation and jobs, while each city also depends on essential services such as energy and transport.
The game emphasizes hands-on planning at a detailed scale, with nearly 1,000 buildings and structures to choose from and more than 60 maps described as large, varied and detailed. That breadth gives city development room to take different forms, while the mayor’s task remains practical: provide services and guide each settlement’s growth rather than simply expand its footprint.
A distinctive feature is the economic link between cities. You can specialize settlements in particular areas and trade between them, using one city’s output to meet another’s needs. This makes regional coordination part of the design: individual cities are managed as places with their own demands, but their development can also contribute to a wider economic balance.
