Caves of Qud casts players as a mutant or a “true kin” descendant in a strange, deeply simulated world of salt deserts, jungles, and remnants of ancient civilizations. Its science-fantasy setting combines a layered storyworld with a hybrid of handwritten and procedurally generated material, giving exploration both historical texture and room for unexpected encounters.
Its turn-based sandbox lets players solve obstacles in markedly different ways: a wall can be breached with a pickaxe, dissolved with corrosive gas, or melted into lava. Creatures and NPCs are simulated with their own skills, equipment, allegiances, and body parts, while character creation offers mutations, cybernetic implants, and distinct backgrounds. Quests, settlements, factions, and tactical combat all sit within that broader simulation.
The four modes shape how this single-player adventure is approached: Classic uses permadeath, Roleplay saves progress at settlement checkpoints, Wander emphasizes exploration, and Daily pairs a fixed character with a fixed world seed.
