Cavalry Girls builds its battlefield around a science-fiction premise: jade, once a featureless mineral, becomes a source of energy when certain people learn to interact with it. As bionic machines emerge and wars follow, players lead mecha-equipped fighters in defense of a city. That protective mission gives the action a clear strategic stake, rather than treating each encounter as combat without context.
The core is a top-down shooter with roguelike combat against enemy soldiers. Before and during the campaign, equipment and teammates can be selected to shape a mecha, while gathered intelligence helps guide deployments against enemy characteristics. Limited supplies make the choice between safer and riskier approaches part of the design. A broad armory of weapons, attributes, and accessories supports different loadouts, and damage types such as burning, cold, and paralysis add further considerations to equipment selection.
The game also pairs battlefield planning with character and narrative systems. Five recruitable characters can join the fight, and a dormitory offers decorating and gift-giving between combat activities. Decisions across four ideological approaches may affect the story and its ending; synthesis and disassembly provide ways to produce equipment or repurpose enemy spoils.
