Cataclismo casts players as leaders of humanity’s survivors after a world-ending catastrophe, defending outposts and citadels from creatures called Horrors. Its central idea is to make fortress construction part of the strategy rather than a backdrop: defenses are assembled piece by piece from wood and stone, shaped around each area’s terrain and the threats expected after sunset.
That construction has tactical consequences. Players can exploit elevation and chokepoints, establish resource routes, and position soldiers such as bowmen and cannoneers for a layered defense. Structures must also account for load-bearing supports, since collapses can kill allies and enemies alike. Daytime is for exploration and developing the fortress; when night falls, the Horrors attack in force, turning planning into real-time command decisions.
The game’s documented formats include a single-player narrative campaign, skirmishes on hand-crafted maps, and a challenge mode with procedurally generated maps and escalating waves. A map editor supports designing and sharing skirmish maps, while players can also share fortress blueprints. Its strategy and simulation focus comes through in the link between construction, resource management, and battlefield command.
