Call of Duty: World at War casts players as U.S. Marines and Russian conscripts fighting Imperial Japanese and German forces across the Pacific and European fronts. Its WWII premise emphasizes harsh, tactically varied encounters, from swamp ambushes and tree-top snipers to Banzai charges and Kamikaze attacks. The focus is not only on battlefield spectacle: the game frames these missions as a struggle through pivotal campaigns against the Axis powers.
The campaign supports online co-op for up to four players, while Competitive Co-Op adds a team-based contest alongside shared missions. Separate from the campaign, class-based multiplayer brings infantry combat together with tanks, customizable classes, Perks, upgradeable weapons, persistent stats and squad-based play. That combination gives World at War a distinctive range of formats, shifting between coordinated campaign battles and competitive matches built around progression and vehicle action.
World at War’s design is rooted in a cinematic presentation, but its defining variety comes from pairing two-front WWII missions with cooperative play and expanded online combat.
