Broken Armor is an arcade-style action game about an inept knight exiled from the kingdom of Slambonia. To earn his way back, he must find the holy grail, though pests and hazards often interrupt any thought of heroic combat. Its lighthearted premise sets up a deliberately scrappy journey through rooms crowded with creatures and obstacles.
Combat asks for restraint: weapons are limited, so deciding whether a threat is worth spending ammunition on is part of getting through each room. The route leads toward exits and includes vermin, hazards, and bosses, with multiple floors to tackle. The game describes its runs as different each time, while its fast, unforgiving pace makes each attempt an opportunity to improve.
The presentation looks back to classic computer games, with graphics and gameplay likened to the era of the 5.25-inch floppy disk. That retro simplicity contrasts with the knight’s awkward predicament and the pressure of choosing when to fight. Broken Armor also includes the playable mage DLC, alongside its single-player adventure.
