Book of Travels is a serene RPG adventure set in the fairytale world of the Braided Shore peninsula. Rather than following linear missions toward an overarching goal, players explore wilds and cities, encounter hidden places, and shape a personal route through a world with no prescribed beginning or end. Its hand-painted diorama presentation gives scenes a layered, three-dimensional depth, while movement uses click-to-walk controls reminiscent of older RPGs.
Character creation emphasizes personality and identity: players choose from 12 Forms instead of building around conventional stats and classes. A broad set of abilities, magical skills, and passive feats can be unlocked and mastered, with experience gained through activities such as exploring, gathering, trading, and courteous interactions. Randomly occurring events make sessions different, and battles are presented as one possible part of travel rather than the sole focus. Players can also learn symbols to communicate with one another, adding a distinctive social element to the journey.
Its appeal is therefore rooted in self-directed travel, character expression, and discovery, rather than a linear campaign structure. The game’s flexible pace and varied ways to gain experience give each player room to pursue a different style of journey.
