Blood Bowl 3 imagines a fantasy world that has replaced warfare with a violent sport devoted to Nuffle. Matches mix touchdown-chasing with murder, cheating, sorcery and the occasional intervention from the gods. Its pitch is not simply a stage for scoring: players must manage a team through a contest where injuries are common and careers can end permanently.
The strategy comes from positioning players wisely, dodging threats or eliminating opponents to clear a path to the end zone. A team can be chosen from twelve factions, each with distinct characteristics, and the game is based on the latest edition of the board game, including redesigned passing mechanics and new skills. Unexpected trouble is part of the design too: an out-of-control troll might devour a teammate and alter a match. Coaches can also create players and customize their appearance, emblems and armour.
Play spans a solo campaign, friendly matches against other players or AI, and competitive play. League management, custom tournaments and an official ladder give the multiplayer side an organized structure, while split-screen PvP is also listed.
