Blackwake is a multiplayer naval first-person shooter built around teamwork, with players crewing small and large ships. Its central appeal is the shared work of keeping a vessel in the fight: crew members maintain and repair the ship, reload and resupply cannons, then coordinate their fire against opposing crews.
The action can shift from ship-to-ship cannon fire to boarding, where combat continues on foot with weapons for sniping, slicing and blasting. Players may nominate a captain, who issues orders and guides the crew’s tactics. That mix of assigned ship duties and direct combat makes cooperation part of the game’s core design rather than a backdrop to naval battles.
Blackwake offers team deathmatch, Siege, which centers on attacking or defending a fort, and Capture the Booty. Its maps vary in weather and time of day, and present hazards such as volcano eruptions and icebergs.
