Blackthorn Arena: Reforged puts the player in charge of an inherited gladiator arena in the Freelands, a setting shaped by adventurers seeking wealth. Its central challenge is managerial as well as martial: recruit gladiators, develop their attributes and skills, choose their equipment, and decide how to build the arena’s fortunes. Some fighters may also become crew auxiliaries, taking on roles such as healer or blacksmith, which ties personnel management to the wider running of the establishment.
Competition extends beyond fights staged at home. Gladiators can enter events in other arenas or explore the Freelands for loot and secrets, while victories bring money and reputation that support new recruits, equipment, and arena upgrades. The game’s world also gives rival fighters an ongoing presence: gladiators outside the player’s roster compete, improve, suffer injuries, and may die. Combat runs in real time, with tactical pause available for issuing commands and switching characters; an optional auto-battler mode offers another way to handle encounters.
Arena bouts are not confined to one format. The listed modes include tag fights, tournaments, throne challenges, exhibitions, and beast shows, alongside fights with different team sizes. Between contests, events and side missions add further decisions, including expeditions for exploration, hunting, or robbery.
