BioShock Infinite casts Booker DeWitt, a hired gun in debt, as the protagonist of a rescue mission in 1912. His target is Elizabeth, a mysterious girl imprisoned since childhood in Columbia, a city in the sky. Booker and Elizabeth must trust one another to escape, and their flight through the city leads them toward its dark secret.
Combat mixes weapons with Vigors, powers that can unleash fire, lightning, or crows. Booker can open Tears in time and space to draw resources such as weapons and turrets into the battlefield. Sky-Lines provide another distinctive part of the action: players zip through Columbia’s airborne setting and fight along these high-speed routes. The game’s description presents weapons, Vigors, and Tears as tools for shaping combat, rather than prescribing one approach.
The setting supplies several kinds of combat spaces, including the streets, zeppelins, and Sky-Lines of Columbia. Booker’s objective remains rescuing Elizabeth and reaching freedom, while the pair’s escape also brings them closer to the city’s secret. BioShock Infinite also has an unlockable 1999 Mode available upon finishing the game, described as offering experienced players a taste of older hardcore-game design and balance. Together, its rescue premise, varied combat tools, and solo format define this action adventure’s particular character.
