Battle Realms: Zen Edition is a real-time strategy game set amid conflict between clans in a martial-arts-inspired world. Its story follows Kenji, an exiled heir to the Serpent throne, whose choices shape a bid to restore the realm or rule it through fear. The included Winter of the Wolf expansion provides a prequel campaign centered on the Wolf clan’s struggle against its Lotus captors.
Its standout unit system makes army-building a process of development: peasants train into soldiers, then can follow paths toward roles such as Samurai, Cannoneers, Bandits, or Berserkers. The battlefield also responds to its surroundings. Higher ground strengthens ranged attacks, rain puts out fires and speeds crop growth, while wildlife can affect troops. Zen Masters add special powers, and victories earn Yin and Yang points used to obtain weapons and magic, tying combat success to further tactical options.
The game supports solo play as well as online multiplayer, with skirmishes that can be customized for player-versus-player battles and matches for up to eight participants.
