Set several years before Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, Arkham Origins follows a young, unrefined Batman on Christmas Eve. Eight assassins are hunting him, turning the night into a pivotal test in his early crime-fighting career. The expanded Gotham City gives this prequel a broader urban setting, from impoverished streets to wealthy penthouses, as Batman pursues justice and confronts characters who will shape his future.
The detective work has its own distinctive focus: an enhanced Case File system lets players reconstruct crimes in real time, combining the cowl’s sensors with the Batcomputer to inspect how events unfolded. Elsewhere, the game builds on FreeFlow combat with new enemy types that call for different approaches. Batman’s gadgets also serve both traversal and combat: the Remote Claw can create tightropes or string enemies up from vantage points, while the Concussion Detonator can stun and disorient groups at close quarters.
The game is listed as single-player, with a campaign that can still be played offline; its online services were retired in 2016. The result is a character-focused prequel whose mix of crime reconstruction, Gotham exploration, and adaptable fighting gives the Dark Knight’s early career its own shape.
