Avorion begins in the aftermath of a galaxy-shattering Event, with the player starting at the outer edge and pushing toward a sealed, perilous center. The central mystery involves the Xsotan, a newly arrived alien race, and Avorion, a metal rumored to have appeared alongside them. This journey gives the sandbox a clear direction: closer to the core means greater danger and greater rewards, while exploration can also uncover wrecks, resources, factions and clues to the catastrophe.
Ship construction is central to the game’s identity. Vessels are assembled from freely scalable blocks, can be tailored for different roles, and break apart at the points struck during space combat. Players can equip weapons, upgrade ships with turrets and system enhancements, hire captains, manage crews and assemble a fleet. Beyond fighting pirates or factions, the game supports trading, freighter raids, asteroid claims, mines and factories, giving players several ways to build influence and wealth. Creative mode offers a separate emphasis on shipbuilding without requiring players to make each design operational.
Friends can build stations together, fight common enemies or share control of a ship, with one steering and another firing weapons. Its play format therefore ranges from an individual’s open-ended expedition to collaborative fleet and station projects, rather than centering on a single competitive match structure.
