Avernum 4: Greed and Glory sends you into a sprawling underground nation of caverns, mines and labyrinths, where cities are falling and rival powers seek the underworld’s riches. You arrive at its wild frontier with personal ambitions, but become someone who may be able to save Avernum. That tension between self-interest and responsibility gives the fantasy adventure its central question: what will you do for the nation, and what will you claim in return?
Combat is turn-based, and the open-ended party system offers tactical choices alongside more than 100 abilities, traits, spells and other ways to grow stronger. Exploration brings huge dungeons, quests and artifacts to collect, create or bless. The story also gives political decisions real prominence: multiple factions ask for your support, and you can pursue peace or a more profitable disaster. Its setting leans on its own lore, history and humor rather than standard elves-and-orcs fantasy, while mixing grim and funny quests.
It begins the Great Trials Trilogy, yet previous Avernum games are not required. As a remaster of the 2005 Avernum 4, it expands the story and adds dungeons, characters and quests, pairing classic party-based role-playing with a broader version of its underground world.
