ATOM RPG casts the player as a survivor of a nuclear catastrophe that destroyed both the Soviet Union and the Western Bloc in 1986. The journey through the Soviet Wasteland has two entwined aims: finding a place in the changed world and investigating a conspiracy threatening what remains of life. Its post-apocalyptic setting draws inspiration from classic computer role-playing games, while the story moves among settlements, wilderness and abandoned military sites.
Character building shapes more than combat readiness. The game pairs a character creation tool with a roleplaying system inspired by GURPS, and says stat combinations can open distinct dialogue and quest-solving approaches. Skills range from lockpicking to gambling, while quests offer alternative solutions. That emphasis on player choice sits alongside turn-based combat inspired by the first two Fallout games, random encounters with both friendly and dangerous wastelanders, and extended, multiple-choice conversations with individual characters.
The experience described is built around pursuing quests at your own pace, weighing dialogue and problem-solving options, and moving between places such as a settlement, the wilds and a military bunker. Even a quieter activity like fishing appears within the same broad wasteland adventure.
