ATLAS frames its pirate adventure around life in a persistent ocean world, where exploration, settlement-building and conflict all feed into the pursuit of fortune. Players can sail between hundreds of landmasses, searching for resources, distinctive creatures, buried treasure and traces of earlier civilizations.
Ships are projects as much as transport. The customization system lets players construct vessels piece by piece, then recruit other players or NPCs to handle duties such as weapons, sails and shore searches. At sea, crews can raid settlements, fight rival fleets or board enemy ships; on land, companies can claim territory and develop settlements. These connected systems give ATLAS its particular blend of nautical survival, cooperative work and territorial competition.
The format is flexible rather than exclusively communal. Official servers offer PvP and PvE, with the former allowing extensive theft and the latter emphasizing cooperation and shared exploration. The game also supports single-player and non-dedicated private sessions with up to eight friends, alongside crossplay between PC and Xbox One. Those options matter when reading player-count information: ATLAS supports both large-scale online play and more contained ways to experience its pirate world.
