Set three years after the Chernarus conflict of the original Arma 2, Operation Arrowhead moves its crisis to Takistan, where US-led coalition forces are sent to restore peace and limit civilian casualties. Players can take on different Army roles, spanning infantry, special operations, piloting and tank crews. This gives the campaign a broad military perspective rather than centering on a single kind of soldier.
Its simulation style is grounded in interacting battlefield systems: modeled ballistics and round deflection sit alongside material penetration, thermal imaging, changing weather and a real-time day-and-night cycle. The large Central Asian landscapes include urban, desert and mountain terrain, with environments described as destructible and interactive. Equipment choices and tactical freedom are part of the design, while the mission editor and supplied editing tools let players build and modify custom content.
The game supports solo and multiplayer campaign play, cooperative missions, and competitive battles; its listed formats also include online PvP and co-op. The standalone release does not require the original Arma 2, though it can integrate with it for a broader warfare simulation.
