Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is a standalone action-adventure in which the writer confronts his murderous double, Mr. Scratch, amid Arizona locations. Its story puts more than survival at stake: Wake fights to reclaim his life and change reality. That premise gives the game a darker, more direct focus on the struggle between the protagonist and his counterpart.
Combat centers on the Fight with Light mechanic. Dangerous enemies stalk the shadows, and players use an arsenal of weapons to dispatch them; in Arcade Mode, mastering light is also key to staying alive until dawn. The setting, eerie pursuers and light-driven combat bring the game’s supernatural conflict into its moment-to-moment action.
The two modes offer different play formats: Story Mode follows the fight against Mr. Scratch, while Arcade Mode challenges players to endure until sunrise and compete on leaderboards.
