Active Matter casts players as operatives trapped in a time loop, returned to the same point after death. Its raids take place in quantum-unstable zones where active matter is both a valuable resource and a threat. The objective is to gather that substance and other loot, then reach safety before the zone disappears. Other operatives from rival timelines pose a danger, alongside hostile creatures and strange objects altered by exposure to active matter.
The game combines extraction-style PvE and PvPvE raids, with the option to venture out alone or in small squads. Its environments can disrupt the rules of a fight: anomalies may change gravitational force or the topology of space, so the danger is not limited to opponents and enemies. Weapons and gear draw on real-world military technologies and tactics, while active matter can let players replicate items from other timelines at their base. That contrast gives the setting its particular character: familiar equipment used amid unstable physics and an uncanny multiverse.
Beyond individual raids, players can expand a syndicate base, upgrade an arsenal, and take part in battles between syndicates over sources of active matter. The game’s appeal is therefore framed around more than simply surviving a mission; extraction, preparation at base, and struggles for control all connect to the operative’s effort to escape the loop.
